Copala, formerly known as San José de Copala, is a four-century-old silver-mining town in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. The town is in the municipality of Concordia. From Mazatlan its about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to this quaint town. When you visit bring what you need and make it a day trip as there is only one small tienda working at this time. When El Chapo escaped in 2015 his first stop was in Copala and although he was long gone the military made the town pay a heavy price for his passing through. The negative press from this coincided with the new super toll road opening that rerouted traffic around this beautiful town. Take the time to spend a couple of hours in Copala and you will feel for a moment like you have been transported to a different time.
